FINE ART WOODTURNING

Tall forest green carved wood vase with diamond topper. Fine art woodwork by Steve Miller.

When I began turning wood I was attracted to the beauty of the wood itself. For many years I made vessels that celebrated the color, grain and feel of the natural material. During that time, woodturners around the world were pushing the boundaries of turned wood into the world of fine art. I was inspired to explore…

Carved and painted round blue sculptural vessel with filial. Inspired by ocean coral. Created by fine art woodworker Steve Miller of WNC.

I now treat my sculptural wood forms as a blank three dimensional canvas. The smooth surface of the turned wood is transformed through carved and burned textures that echo rhythms found in nature. Layers of carefully applied paint create bold textures, accentuated contours and fields of nuanced color. The end result is a form or vessel that has the warmth and tactile qualities of wood, with the visual punch of a painting.
